Orientation Goals of This Section Fundamentals of Safety and Legal Requirements
We’ll review the key elements of safety and the critical legal requirements outlined in FMCSA regulations for commercial motor vehicle (CMV) operation. This includes an overview of the FMCSRs, particularly parts 380, 382, 383, and 390–399. Consequences of Non-Compliance Learn about the repercussions for violating FMCSR parts 380–399.
Topics will include: Driver disqualification Monetary fines Legal and career implications State and Local Laws for CMVs Gain an understanding of state and local regulations affecting
CMV operation, including: Requirements for stopping at weigh stations or scales Awareness of vehicle size, weight limitations, and low-clearance zones Height restrictions and bridge formula compliance for distributing vehicle weight Extra Knowledge Along the Way
While some content might not appear on the final quiz, we’ll include practical tips and insights—our “Xpress STOPS”—that we believe every professional driver should know.
